What is the cloud? It is a private/public/hybrid set of pooled compute, network and storage resources, dynamically provisioned on demand and charged for much like a utility bill. Below are some common types:

Private cloud: private cloud can be based on premise and/or in co-located data centre. An example is VMware’s vSphere product.

Public cloud: cloud infrastructure provisioned by cloud service providers e.g. AWS.

Hybrid cloud: infrastructure/applications can be be provisioned across both private and public clouds.

Multi cloud: a combination of public clouds that is becoming more prevalent relatively recently, providing portability of workloads, addresses DR and BC use cases and negates cloud provider lock in.

There are a range of public cloud platforms to choose from the most common by market share being Amazon Web Services, Azure, Google Cloud Platform offering varying, competing services and cost models.
